Distribution methods

  •  Extending my media product into different areas...• I think as a dance music magazine, I would like my magazine and logo to extend, first of all to a slot on radio 1 on a Friday night. Then once I have my product established create a ‘WIRED fm’.• I would also infiltrate my product to festivals, have a WIRED stage at Cream Fields and Global Gathering, also sponsor dance music festivals such as Tomorrow Land.• By doing this I would enable my product to catch the attention of more possible consumers. For example with 200,000 people attending Tomorrow Land they would see that it was sponsored by ‘WIRED’ and be inclined to buy it afterwards. Therefore bringing my product to more and more people, gaining more revenue and extending the content.

Photoshop "spot techniques"

I decided to take a small video of some of the most useful tools I have used throughout the project so far. The healing brush and the spot heal tool.

Target audience opinions

I decided to do another small research task into what my target audience thought my magazine should look like and what codes and conventions I should be using. They said that rather than  a DJ facing away from the person who's reading the magazine on the front cover they would like the model to be facing forward. I had already done this so I was pleased with this feedback. A couple of people said I should change the text of the title on my double page spread so I did this and it looked allot better and made allot more sense. This was because I changed the font type so that the new amount of text fit above my headline.

Font types-again

The main types of font I have used in my magazine are sharp and bold, this is because I wanted the text in my magazine to look like the text that DJ's use to make there label look cool and fancy like the image to the left, this is because it appeals to my target audience.

Front Cover photos

These are just two of the 200 photos I had taken for my front cover. The one on the left was for my rough cut and what I originally thought to be for my final piece. I then decided I needed a change. This was decided when I cut the image out. I found out the contrast between the model and the background was bad so it was hard to cut out onto a blank background. The second picture however made the model look allot more professional and less young. The way the model isn't looking at the camera and is slightly to the right of the picture makes it look allot more professional. It was also allot easier to cut out as there was a very dark colour against a light background.

Decoration

The colored rectangle that I created for the contents page has now been used in the front cover as well. I decided to put it behind the model as it filled in some of the white space and it made the front cover look alot nicer.

In-design basics

So In design is an extremely helpful program which I used to create the layout of my magazine. I used a selection of tools on the left hand side but the easiest to use was the rectangular frame tool, this is the tool that created the layout of my magazine as it is what I had to put all my photos and videos in.

Photography

I took quite a few of my friend Bradley to make sure I got the perfect picture that would fit onto my contents page.

Photography

When I was taking picture of the set I realized that it was going to be extremely hard to get the brightness right on the image. This is when Photoshop came in handy as I could simply change the brightness on that.

Page Numbers

The page numbers were a massive deal when creating the contents page, this is because they had to obviously be large and bold but they also had to look as though they fit into the frame and not block up the pictures. I decided to go with red because it fitted in with my color scheme on the front cover of my magazine. I made them smaller than they are in the picture on the left aswell so that they didnt take overlap most of the picture.

VIP section

This is the top part of my double page spread. I decided to add this part to my double page spread as it implied that the double page spread was the unique part of the magazine as it was "VIP" access only. this made the reader think that the section of the magazine they were reading was exclusive and had some good information in it. This made me relate this to the article as I made it sound allot more professional than the snippets of text I had on the front cover and contents page.

Photography

I tried to take a few photos whilst we were walking around town to show the nightlife of a busy city center and too show the way teens react when walking around town on a night

Photography

Some of the images were quite serious when taking them in town but others wernt as seen by this photo, which is why I didn't use them. I needed one which made him look professional and like a DJ but also represented the nightlife that DJ's have.

Photography

The next few posts are going to be about the range of photos I have taken and why I chose/didn't chose them

So this photo was going to be a double page spread photo as I was running low on time. The reason I decided to change it (thank god I did) was because my friends became free for a trip to town one night

Layouts Cont.

I then did the layouts for my front cover page and my double page spread. These took quite sometimes because they were allot messier and unorganized compared to the contents page. I knew that I needed to have columns of artists on the front cover so I created a bunch of frames for the titles of the artists and the little descriptions that would come with the titles. I also knew that I would have a large image in front of allot of text and the smaller images so I placed a large frame over the whole page so when I had my pictures I could add them to the frame. I then decided to add a strip at the top for maybe a "free poster" promotion to go in as most music magazines have that nowadays.
The layout for the double page spread was slightly easier because there wasn't going to be as much on the double page spread as there was on the front cover. I needed three columns (Frames) for my article, a large frame covering the whole page for the image and a frame for the title. I added page numbers and a few more frames for some smaller ideas I had for the spread which you'll see when my project progresses.

A piece of Content Decoration

So I decided the contents page needed something to perk it up a little bit. I decided to do this little bit of decoration on the contents page to make it look a bit more fitting for who my target audience is. It adds a sense of fun to the magazine and also gets rid of any white/blank space that is unneeded and makes the page just look so much better. I put it above the different pages  (page numbers and descriptions) too fill in the big white gap above the text

The pictures

So this is a set of pictures I went out and took a while ago. I went out with a group of friends with one of the schools cameras and just took quite allot of photos one night, ranging from long shots to close ups to scenic pictures. I found this task fairly enjoyable as I was with my mates and we were messing about but also doing some serious work. I told them where to stand and what poses to pull etc. but I took them on a Friday night in town so that made things a little more interesting as people kept on running and trying to get there picture taken. After I had taken the photos and went back to school too choose suitable ones I decided that I needed more variation with my pictures so I need to take some more as most of my photos were fairly dark and quite masculine. For now this looks alright as my rough cut deadline approaches i'm feeling fairly confident about what i've done so far

Photography

After getting the hang of the brightness with the photos I could make an ice rink stand look like a stage at a club

The article

I needed too write up and article to go on my double page spread alongside my question and answer section. As I'm not the best in the world at English and I don't have a wide range of vocabulary I found this task quite time consuming, however I think I did a good job overall. I made up a DJ named vintage and had too act as though I was writing on behalf of an interviewer sort of. I found this quite easy as IO prefer writing for someone rather than writing about myself. This is because I find describing others allot easier to do than describing myself. So I made a DJ up from scratch and wrote about him. It wasn't to hard I needed to come up with a few song names and venues but other than that it was all about being descriptive. I talked about how vintage had became the biggest DJ in the UK with his number 1 song hitting record breakers in beatports (Music downloading website) sales and how he has begun a UK tour to "please his fans". I have decided to put my article in this blog post so that you guys can have a read and see what you think. I did a bit of research into the different companys and owners of festivals and beatport and added that research into my article aswell. Hope you enjoy !

New DJ artist Vintage brings a stunning record to beatport’s sales for youngest DJ to ever reach no.1. Aged 16, Vintage destroys Martin Garrix’s current record on beatport by a massive 12%. “Vintage’s new album ‘Chips’ includes 6 of the most unstoppable tracks ever created” said Robert F. X. Sillerman (Owner of Beatport and SFX Entertainment). The young DJ is expected to receive record deals from companies such as Spinnin’ records and Revealed Recordings.          Revealed recordings (owned by the world’s no.1 DJ Hardwell) described Vintage’s music to be “unique” and “innovative”, which obviously created a hype for the indestructible teenager. “I want to thank my family and my fans for making my childhood dreams come true”. Vintage’s biggest track “Unleash” starts with a cruising melody and ends with an incredible drop, Dazzling listeners and leaving crowds stunned.
Vintage starts his UK tour for the release of his new album “Chips” generating hype across the cluster of countries awaiting him. Major sets such as London’s 02 Academy and Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena provide the DJ with the amount of space he’ll need due to the masses of fans expected to participate in Vintage’s tour.
Vintage plans on world exposure after his UK tour, with the record deal from “Spinnin”, the young teen plans to set his next destination as Belgian’s “TomorrowLand”, an appropriate venue for such a talented young artist. So with an amazing start to the young adult’s career what more are we expecting from him? Your questions have been asked and now they have been answered by Vintage himself check it out!

Front cover Decoration

This is some decoration that i'm going to have on my front cover. The sections that aren't filled in in the middle of the text is where the photo I will have of a "DJ" so it will look as though the picture is overlapping some of the text. I stuck with the yellow and red color scheme so that it looked allot more professional and fit in with the rest of the front cover. The reason it says "CUBIC BEATS" Is because that is the name of the DJ that is on the front cover of the magazine. "Bring the Beats to the Clubs" is the caption for the DJ. The "Who came here to rock the house" Is the caption for the magazine itself which personally I think is quite witty as most DJs use that sentence in live concerts.

Initial Research

One of the very first things I did before starting my music magazine design was to create an initial planning sheet. This was my ideas wall for all the stories that were going to be included in the contents page and article, the photos i'd be taking, the Names and Fonts I would use for different elements of the magazine, the layout of each page and how things looked and finally the research I would carry out to learn more about music magazines in general. This will make the rest of my project allot easier to do as I can look back at my initial plan and get ideas straight away.

Wednesday, 9 April 2014

The contents

I had to write up my contents for the contents page and I decided I would split my magazine up into 4 different sections so that it would be easier to think of stories for my magazine. Obviously I had a few stories already in mind from my initial planning but I didn't have enough to fit these two columns. So with my initial planning a bit more research and a look back at my old research I came up with a list of stories and titles that would feature in my magazine and I have to say i'm pretty proud of them. The number for the pages are just the right size compared to the text, the sections of the magazine are titled with a reasonable size font and the text in between the numbers not only makes sense but looks professional and modern. I think this is conventionally what all DJ magazines go for.

The Question and answer section

besides designing a lovely magazine I also had to do some writing -_- Which can get very boring but at the same time it interested me slightly. Completely making up a DJ from scratch was a challenge but a fun one. I had to think of a name for him I had to think of a venue and song names and album names that he had created it was quite a fun thing to do. I then had to turn all this information into a question and answer section for my double page spread. This was fairly easy as I already knew everything I had to add in but the layout of it was hard to create as text would be too long for the columns so I would have to shorten it down or to short so i'd have to add to it but in the end it looked pretty good. A question and answer section is also extremely conventional when it comes to DJ magazines because the target audience like finding out about the artist from they're own words rather than someone else's. I hope you are enjoying my project run through so far and I hope to give you lots more information on my project

Thinking of titles

I needed to think of some cool titles that would appeal to the public and target audience of my choice. I decided to go for talking about artists more than talking about anything else, although I did throw in an ultra music festival headline. This was so that it added a bit of variety to the headlines. and made the front cover look abit different to a plain page with a picture and a title!

Title (Upper part of front cover)

So I decided to work on the title (Upper part of the front cover) to make it look more like a music magazine as I didn't just want a word saying "Hooked" at the top of my magazine as it wouldn't of been very eye catching. I decided to underline the text to make it stand out more. I also decided to put a circle around the "H" this was so that it added a bit of variety to the title. It changed the color of the text and it also made it look as though the circle was part of the font. The next thing I did was to add text to the banner at the top of the front cover to act as a banner. This made the front cover look extremely professional (in my opinion) I decided to add two offers. One is the poster which can be placed anywhere in the magazine and the other is the free CD which I might need to add a section to the double page spread for so I might change the CD to something else so I don't need to take up any space inside the pages I am creating for a CD.

Starting my Mag

So after choosing a selection of fonts and creating my title for the magazine I decided I would work on the layout of each of the pages. the first layout I decided to work on was the contents page. I decided to go for a blocky look with a range of different picture frames. This was so that the page looked appealing and people could see which articles were where just by looking at an image rather than having to read text. It also made the page look allot nicer. The two long columns in the upper left part of the page are where text and page numbers will be going. I still need to enter text and images and create the layouts of other pages but hopefully my magazine will soon be finished!

Mixmag double page spread 5

I decided to do one last double page spread analysis. This double page spread is from a mixmag magazine and is very conventional. I've started to notice that most DJ magazines have the article on one side of the page and the artists image on the other side. I don't think I like the cross over idea, where the image goes across both pages which is good as my magazine will look more conventional. As with all the other double page spreads that I have reviews I like the bar at the top and the large title that comes with the article. I also find the fact that most of the double page spreads I have reviewed have some sort of Question and answer section to it. With this particular magazine the double page spread is an entire question and answer section other than the introduction. I might use this when it comes to my own double page spread but i'm not 100% sure as of yet.

DJ Mag double page spread 4

Yet again another double page spread analysis and again its DJ Mag. I'm becoming increasingly interested in DJ Mag as I am a huge fan of EDM/Electro music myself and that's the type of music DJ mag talks about. I love the way they lay out there double page spread as well. They have the image of the DJ/artist on one side of the page and generally have the name of the artist or the name of the article on the same side as the image. They then add a small quote next to the artist to show someone has actually talked about them and they're "fame". This instantly insinuates that the DJ is famous. They then have the other half of the page full of text and generally have a Question and Answer column from they're previous magazine added to the double page spread. This adds something to the page that most other double page spreads don't have. As its still a full article but people have asked questions on the DJ and the DJ has answered them himself.

Looking Into Font Types

Looking into name ideas I decided to look up a bunch of adjectives online. I didn't see many that appealed to me when I was looking through them. I came across the word "hooked" when reading through another DJ magazine. at the time it took allot of thought but I think i'm going to choose this word as the name of my magazine. Simply because it attracts the audience and makes them "Hooked". After choosing a name I thought about which font to use for the title of my magazine. I experimented with quite a few different fonts in bold, black and white, This was to first see what looked well in what color. I then tried to decide what I wanted my font to look like. Do I want a sharp crisp look with a few edges cut off or a smooth curvy edged font. I decided to ask some of my friends who enjoy reading DJ Mag-
azines and they told me they preferred the straight edged fonts. But in my opinion I still couldn't decide between the second and the fourth font (on the left). This is because I thought both fonts looked "DJ magziney" I like the way the letter O's connect with one another on the curved font but I like the way the letters look as though they should be touching but aren't on the straight edged font. I came to the conclusion that the straight edged font is the one I am going to go for. Simply because its what my target audience suggested.

DJMag Double Page Spread 3

Welcome back! As you can see im reviewing another double page spread. This article is very interesting as the title links in extremely well with the image. The way the lemon is placed in front of the artists face which adds an amount of curiosity as to who the artist is. This is quite unconventional of a club/dance music magazine as the main focus tends to primarily be on the artist. This will be a large attraction to the artist and the article as people will want to know more about him/her. I do like this idea however I don't think I will be implementing it into my own music magazine. This is simply because I want my readers to be able to know what the article is about before having to read anything. I also think it look allot more professional and formal if the article show the DJ rather than trying to make members of the public read on.

DJmag Double Page Spread 2

I'm back with another, yes another piece of research! This double page spread is from the famous electro music magazine DJmag. It stars a fairly famous DJ Ferry Corsten, The use of a famous DJ being on the double page spread of the magazine bring a large audience to the magazine, (People who enjoy listening to Ferry Corsten). This also gets the DJs reputation up as he is starred in an extremely popular magazine. I will pretend that the artist I have on my double page spread is extremely famous by  making some facts and statistics up about him/her. I am also going to make him look smart but fairly casual and hopefully get a good image of him/her behind some decks or facing a crowd!

Mixmag Double Page Spread Research

Good afternoon guys and gals! So I finished my contents page research yesterday and now I'm going to start my research on double page spreads. The first decent double page spread I found was a mixmag spread. The article is definitely what my target audience is all about, bright colors, massive crowds, people shouting and general messing about. I like the way the image spreads across both pages and is sort of split up and it gives a sort of "cut and paste" look to it. Although I like the way the page looks I think i'd rather have an artist on the double page spread. I think this would make the spread look allot better than this one as it would be about the artist rather than a problem with "music". This could open up allot of different images I could take, a close up to show the concentration and professionalism of the DJ, a wide/long shot to show the crowd from behind a DJ, a medium shot showing the DJ at his decks. I don't know what to do as of yet as I am still figuring out how to form a crowd together and take a picture of a large amount of people!!

Mixmag contents page 5

For my final piece of research into contents pages I decided to go back to mixmag. This is because Mixmag have a similar target audience as I do and I love the way they lay out there magazines, especially the more modern ones. Again mixmag have gone for the one larger image dominating the page with one column of text and a small row of text at the bottom of the page. I love the type of font that has been used on this contents page, especially the number 110 that is lying on top of the image. It just fits so well with the type of genre mixmag is about. I think I will be using a similar font for the page numbers I put on top of my images, this is because it creates a fun looking vibe to the page that normal text doesn't, especially with it being so big. Again Mixmag have made the main section in there magazine called "VIP" and they have made the color of the page numbers golden, I love this feature as it makes the page seem more "expensive" and it creates a sense of something special when you read/look at the page which is why I think I am going to use a similar font color for the page numbers!

Q contents page 4

Another contents page I found was for a completely different type of magazine too the one I am making. I decided to give it a quick look because I can still use some of the features that this contents page has to offer. I like the way Q have put there logo on the contents page more than once. I think they did this because it fits with the color scheme, and whilst its rather noticeable it doesn't take up to much space on the page. I also like how Q have made a section dedicated to a certain band. This will attract a very niche audience as allot of the magazine will be about one particular band rather than a group of bands. I don't think I will be using this idea in my magazine however simply because it differs from DJ magazines because in my personal opinion I want to know about a range of different DJs not just one! The house style and the way the page is designed looks smart and formal and it fits with the target audience Q is trying to attract. This is also what DJ magazines do and its what I am planning on doing with my own magazine!

DJmag contents page 3

Good afternoon everyone! I'm back with another contents page to talk about! This one is a DJmag contents page, whilst looking at the different selections of content pages linked to DJ magazines I'm starting to realise that they're all fairly similar. Bright colors, Loads of colorful and packed images and some informal language. This is what makes up a DJ magazine on pretty much every page. I like the bar at the top of the page, it might not mean anything but its a cool decoration. I like how that bar is then repeated throughout the contents page to put the magazine into different sections. As I have said in other reviews I am thinking about implementing this "feature" into my own magazine, this is because I like the idea of splitting the magazine into different sections such as: VIP, Music, Artists, Festivals etc. This is because it instantly lets the reader pick the section they want to flick too. I also like how DJmag have added page numbers to the images, showing off the most important parts of the magazine.

Mixmag Contents Page 2

Good Afternoon everyone! Today I venture further into my contents page research. For my second piece of research I am looking at a mixmag contents page. There is allot about this contents page which I would love to implement into my own magazine but there is also allot of changes I would make. First of all I love the house style that mixmag have went for. In many of mixmags magazines they use the black background with white text. They also have the "golden" colored page numbers which makes the page seem more "expensive". I like how the logo has been placed in the top left of the page. Out of the way of the important text and image but also highly visible, giving mixmag a larger reputation. In the bottom left hand corner of the page there is a special offer which is probably shown on the front of the magazine as well. The use of bright colors in the image links in with the genre of music the magazine is all about. The "party" lifestyle is usually related to electro, dance, dubstep, Drum and bass etc. music which is why mixmag have chosen to use this image. I like how the most important sections of the magazine have been sectioned off on the right side of the page under the "VIP" category, where as the smaller parts of the magazine are at the bottom with smaller bold headlines than the "VIP" section. I think when I am creating my magazine I will implement the different colored page numbers when creating the menu of my contents. I will also put the magazine name/logo in the top left/right or the bottom left/right to make my company stand out more.

DJ Mag Contents Page 1

I'm back again! This time with a contents page for DJmag! I decided that once I had reviewed/researched front covers I would move onto contents pages. Personally this front cover looks fantastic for my target audience, this becomes apparent when you look at the color scheme. I like how the magazine is split into 5 different sections: Upfront, Raving mad, Music, Tech and finally Features. These 5 sections are then split up into smaller sections which makes the contents page look allot more ordered and "cool"! I think I might implement this idea into my own contents page simply because I like the idea of it and I think it looks allot more professional and smart.

Music Mag Research - Mixmag 4

Morning people! I decided to do another piece of research to do with music magazines! I decided to another mixmag magazine, this was because mixmag do perfect magazines for my target market (teens - young adults). This is because of the vibrant colors, the use of a very famous artist (deadmau5) and the use of bold "cool" font. The use of vibrant colors link into my target market and the people who enjoy this music because of the type of music. If you go to a concert with this sort of music playing, almost everyone will be wearing something bright and colorful, this is why magazines use those colors. Mixmag also make it apparent that the magazine someone is viewing is mixmag. They do this by making there logo/heading the main part of the front cover. I might steal this idea but I might do something else, I was thinking about making the artist the main part of the front cover to increase interest in the magazine and bring a larger audience to the magazine.

Music Mag Research - Contents Page 3

Hope everyones doing okay out there! This is the contents page on a well known DJ mag, there are many features that I want to use in my own magazine! Each section of the magazine is split up into different bright colours which will attract the target audience I am looking for. I like how they have only outlined the main sections of the magazine with images rather than have loads of different images dotted around the page, I will be using this in my magazine contents page to show off the proffesionalism of the magazine because in my opinion it looks pretty professional... I like how the subheading has a block of colour around it making it stand out from the rest of the text. I also think that the way the little headings have been sectioned by lighter colours is a great eye catching feature.

Music Mag Research - MixMag 1

Morning everyone! So I'm starting my research into other DJ magazines and the first one I chose is mixmag! This edition obviously stars calvin harris on the front cover, who in my opinion is a rather famousDJ. This creates a good reputaion for mixmag as they instantly know the type of people who will be buying the product. (People who love calvin harris or general DJ's) This lets them design the rest of the magazine for there target market. The front cover is covered in different fonts, different colours and the logo is one of the main eye catching points of the cover. Each section of text has a sub-heading which is in a different colour to the rest of the text. I personally love this idea as it shows whoever is reading the magazine what the main parts of the mag are going to be about.

Music Mag Research - DJ Mag 2

How is everyone on this glorious day?! I'm still researching different DJ mags and I came across probably the most famous one out there 'DJ Mag' A pretty simple name I know but it gets the point across. On the front cover of this magazine is a DJ called Hardwell who in my opinion is the best DJ out there, in fact he is the best DJ out there at the moment, He was rated number 1 DJ in the world!  This again gives DJ mag a huge boost in popularity because people will be wanting too know more about the number 1 DJ in the world. I think I'm going to implement this idea into my own work by making up some facts and figures about my posing 'DJ' too make him look good and make the magazine I'm creating look better.

Music Mag Research - DJ Mag 5

Hows it going? I've decided to make one more post on my research task and I decided to do another DJ mag magazine. This is because, once again it fits with what I want to do. I would of reviewed a Q magazine or a Mojo magazine but I want to focus on what the magazine I am making looks like. Once again DJ mag have got one of the most famous DJ's ever on the front cover. The colors of the fonts and the sizes and different types of font make the house style of the magazine.

Feedback from Preliminary task

After finishing the magazine my teacher gave me some crucial feedback on what I can do better and what I did well. I was told that the way I had laid out my titles on the front cover and contents page was done really well but I needed some more information on the front cover and less information on the contents page. I could relate to this as I already knew what I had done wrong I just didn't have time for improvements. This is something else I needed to keep an eye on for my music magazine, Time management is something I need to focus on as in my other subjects I have been really stressed etc. because of deadlines and how poor my time management skills are. All the feedback I received whether bad or good was very helpful and was noted down to make sure I remembered them when thinking about planning my music magazine.

Preliminary Task

For a few weeks I have been working on my preliminary task which was to create a front cover and contents page for a school magazine. I had to take every photo myself using the schools camera. I took a medium close up of a student and placed it on the contents page, I also had a similar sort of image on the front cover. I thought this task was quite fun as it was good practice with programs I need to use whilst making my music magazine (Photoshop and In design). I named my magazine "Daily Bay" and my I took an image of my friend to put on the front cover. The contents page included a number of images which you can see below and the descriptions for each section of the magazine were wrote next to it.
